For the first time this year at fiac! there will be a special project by Swarovski on the Balcon d’Honneur at the Grand Palais, part of the new Swarovski Series collaboration with the fair. “We have a fabulous project with Swarovksi, this year by Wu Tsang, an artist from Los Angeles who is represented by Isabella Bortolozzi,” said fiac!’s Jennifer Flay. “It’s a huge installation on the Balcon d’Honneur that references The Wizard of Oz and the ‘man behind the curtain,’” she said.
A transgender artist, Tsang has worked with Swarovski crystals in the past but has never been able to afford to work with them to the extent that this opportunity has enabled. The artist explores the potential qualities of sound when interacting with the material of crystal. Tsang creates connections between the interplay of light, sound, and crystal, creating a case for the illusion of power in voice and language. “It’s this massive installation of crystals that has been engineered by the Swarovski technicians and Wu Tsang and I can’t wait to see it,” said Flay.
