In 2012, the Los Angeles-based fragrance house Maison Louis Marie was founded by Marie du Petit Thouars. Its roots trace back to the legacy of her ancestor—an 18th-century French botanist named Louis Marie Aubert du Petit Thouars—whose pioneering work in plant science informed the brand’s philosophy, and its ethos still today. Each fragrance, candle, and body care creation reflects that botanical heritage lineage, as the brand approaches scent as an invitation for a more thoughtful way of living.

As the independent company continues to expand—with placements at retailers like Sephora, Ssense, Bluemercury, Credo, and Goop—it also further defines its identity through physical spaces of its own. This month, Maison Louis Marie unveils its second Los Angeles boutique in Silver Lake, marking both a homecoming and an evolution for the brand. Located at 3920 Sunset Boulevard, the new outpost is now the company’s largest retail destination, offering its most complete expression of the brand universe.
Rather than creating a traditional storefront, founder Marie du Petit Thouars envisioned a destination that feels lived in—a place where architecture, materiality, and fragrance exist in quiet conversation. Designed alongside the Los Angeles-based studio Via Clover—the Southern California design and development studio recognized for creating interiors for luxury fashion houses like Alaïa, Dries Van Noten, and Chloé—the boutique invites visitors to experience the brand as they would a thoughtfully curated home.
Silver Lake is more than the site of the company’s latest expansion, as du Petit Thouars and her husband—her partner in work and life—have spent more than a decade living in the neighborhood, where much of the brand’s aesthetic sensibility first took shape. Sunset Junction, in particular, became synonymous with a lifestyle rooted in creativity, design, and an appreciation for everyday beauty. Opening a store in the neighborhood represents a return to those formative years while celebrating how far the independent fragrance house has come.
Silver Lake: Beyond Inspiration

“Opening our Silver Lake store feels deeply personal,” said du Petit Thouars. “I have spent years in this neighborhood. It has always felt aligned with our point of view, with the way the brand thinks about beauty and about home. We wanted the space to reflect that intimacy. Not a store you walk through, but a world you step into.”
This ideology guided design decisions throughout the new boutique. Working with Via Clover, the team conceived the space as an apartment rather than a retail environment. The intent was to create an atmosphere where discovery happens organically, encouraging visitors to slow down and experience scent through the lens of architecture, light, and texture.

The design begins with the building itself. Rather than disguising the structure’s washed clay exterior, Via Clover embraced its restrained character, responding with an interior that balances warmth and precision. References to the minimalist architectural language of Joseph Dirand meet the expressive material palette associated with Sophia Coutas, resulting in a space that feels simultaneously contemporary and timeless.
Throughout the boutique, layered materials establish a sense of sophistication. Two-toned plaster walls and softly curved arches frame displays crafted from silver travertine, solid oak, clay tile, raw blackened steel, and poured concrete. Custom furniture anchors each room, including a sculptural stainless steel sink paired with a travertine countertop and bespoke oak cabinetry featuring stone inlays. Every display riser has been individually crafted from oak, travertine, or clay tile, presenting Maison Louis Marie’s fragrances, candles, and home objects with understated architectural clarity.

Textiles further soften the environment. Fabric wall panels and woven pieces by celebrated French designer Ronan Bouroullec introduce warmth and movement, while a bold graphic rug by CC-Tapis grounds the interiors. Lighting by Volker Haug and Urban Electric Co. casts a gentle glow across the boutique, emphasizing texture over spectacle and encouraging guests to linger rather than rush through the experience.
The result is a retail concept that feels remarkably residential. Visitors move through interconnected spaces that unfold naturally, with fragrance serving as the invisible thread connecting each room. Materials age gracefully, natural light shifts throughout the day, and every design element contributes to an atmosphere that reflects Maison Louis Marie’s belief that beauty should reveal itself gradually.
