Nicholas Kirkwood’s shoes are epic. They range from flats to sky-high heels, but their height isn’t what sets them apart – they are architectural, boasting design complexities that make them best described as objets d’art. As he said in a 2010 interview with Whitewall, “I love the idea of architecture and making things, really concentrating on every little detail and [designing] something that doesn’t just look like it’s off the shelf… I am definitely guilty of making some completely un-wearable shoes.”
We went to Kirkwood’s spring/summer 2013 collection preview in New York a few weeks ago and – maybe it’s just because we had Miami on the brain – several pairs looked like they’d shine best carrying curators and art patrons alike from booth to booth at Art Basel Miami Beach.
We got in touch with Kirkwood’s studio and asked the designer himself to choose four pairs from the collection that would be just divine for the city where the heat is on, all night on the beach ‘til the break of dawn.
