Dreamlike details of out-of-this world florals were the inspiration for Fendi’s Haute Couture fall/winter 2017-18 collection, which debuted in Paris this week. From another planet, perhaps, blooms burst on garments with fishtail points, winged edges, and leather foliage. Intricate craftsmanship led to an array of new techniques, too: re-assembled mink as lace fabric for collars and cuffs; the creation of pixel confetti, where the same mink fabric is cut into countless disc-like shapes and stitched onto silk organza; and hand-painted landscapes grace wearer on shaved mink and silk pieces.
Shapes and silhouettes were precious and wonderfully thought-out, with cocooning shoulders and heart-shaped capes draping downward. Contoured sleeves produced an image of new sophistication, flowerpot clutches were youthful, and life-sized flowers on pointed suede mule shoes were delicate and deliberate. Colors were powerful in vibrant hues, like red demanding attention, and royal purple-blue flowers contrasting on taupe. Turquoise was the base for yellow, white, and orange-red dainty fur poufs, and partially pastel full-looks struck with pops of color elsewhere.
