For the fall/winter 2017 collection, Lacoste‘s Felipe Oliveira Baptista‘s took inspiration from the life of René Lacoste. The brand’s founder, after his sporting career, created the company Air Equipement, which was partially responsible for programs in the aircraft industry like the Concorde and Airbus.
From there, Oliveira Baptista channeled aviation and astronomy into a collection filled with high-tech and fantasy. On the runway were details like multiple pockets, shoulder and knee padding, and cotton ribbing—calling to mind an astronaut’s suit. Materials like leather, nylon, wool, fleece, and synthetic fur were mixed with matte and metallic colors of aniseed, ochre orange, slate blue, peach, and lilac. Voluminous pants reminded us of parachutes and prints of lunar sunsets, galaxies, and planets added a playful wink to close out the show.
