This May in New York, designer Marie Laffont and artist Marc-Aurèle Debut celebrated a collaboration of three exclusive shoe designs at Palo Gallery on Bond Street. Guests gathered for cocktails within the intimate space, taking in the two visionaries’ deft layering of technicality, artistry, and a combined sixth sense for the shimmering facets of human nature.

The unique designs, not currently in production or for sale, blurred the lines between art and fashion, offering highly sculptural, fluid, and imaginative footwear. A pair of delicate mules were embellished with oversized, cloud-like, baby pink straps, with extra-large buttons and intricate woven details. Sumptuous, vibrant clogs evoked the joy of tie-dye, ruched to perfection in hues reminiscent of a rose-colored sunset—or the passionate flush of skin. Finally, spiked and tufted black knee-high boots elicited a desire for protection, as well as rebellion, demanding an ode to the heart-pounding, universal punk spirit.

Both Laffont and Debut are Paris natives with keen eyes for the thrilling intersection of art and human desire. Laffont studied design at Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne as well as received an MFA at L’École Duperré. Her experience as a shoe designer with leading brands such as Zac Posen, Christian Louboutin, and Sonia Rykiel led her to launch her own brand of signature, spirited footwear in 2019. Debut studied at both Central Saint Martins in London and the Royal College of Arts London, and has developed a fiercely intentional process, using a myriad of non-traditional materials, from metal wire to latex, in extremely personal and meaningful abstract works of art.

Debut shares a mission to “question the essence of human relationships, memory, physical space, objects and techniques to identify the body’s intrinsic reactions to structural and environmental influences...[exploring] the cultural and psychological complexities of sexuality, body image, and human anatomy with its emotions and physiology.”
