Design Director Norbert Stumpfl leads Brioni into its eighth decade with a philosophy rooted in quiet elegance, refined simplicity, and enduring craftsmanship—where luxury is not declared but quietly felt. As Brioni marks its 80th anniversary, the Roman house—founded in 1945 and internationally revered for presenting the first men’s fashion show in 1952—enters a new chapter with the same quiet conviction that has long defined its legacy. Known for dressing cinematic icons from Cary Grant to Clark Gable, Brioni has always stood at the intersection of discretion and distinction. Today, its presence feels more essential than ever—not as a symbol of status, but as a testament to craftsmanship, character, and enduring grace.
Since his appointment as Design Director in 2018, Norbert Stumpfl has guided Brioni with quiet precision—drawing from the house’s archive and sensibility while attuning to the poetics and pace of contemporary life. Under his direction, Brioni has expanded into womenswear with La Donna, refined its silhouette toward fluidity and ease, and reaffirmed its creative values through projects rooted in artisanal craft and emotional clarity—most notably, the Dualité, Crystal Edition with Lalique. Inspired by the contrast between heat, machinery, and luminous refinement he encountered at the Lalique ateliers, Stumpfl helped shape a fragrance that, in his words, “does not shout, yet envelops the wearer with an irresistible presence”—a concept that reflects the very essence of Brioni.

At the heart of his design philosophy lies the idea of “quiet elegance”: a commitment to creating garments that are timeless, purposeful, and attuned to the needs of modern life. His approach focuses on reduction rather than embellishment, always allowing the identity of the wearer to lead. He has also reconnected Brioni with a contemporary audience through campaigns fronted by Jude Law and Oscar Isaac—figures chosen not for celebrity, but for embodying what Stumpfl calls “Living Elegance.”
In this thoughtful conversation with Whitewall, Stumpfl reflects on Brioni’s legacy, the emotional architecture of tailoring, and what it means to design garments that feel as if they have always existed. It is a portrait of a designer who speaks softly, works precisely, and is reshaping the language of luxury—for both men and women—with humility, conviction, and care.

WHITEWALL: Your recent collaboration with Lalique on the Dualité, Crystal Edition fragrance is a fusion of craftsmanship and artistry. What inspired this partnership?
NORBERT STUMPFL: The partnership came about through our collaboration with Lalique on the fragrance collection. We launched five perfumes together, and I was invited to visit their ateliers in France. Witnessing their creative process was a striking contrast to the final result, these objects of transparency.
There, I could feel the immense heat, the noise of industrial machinery, combined with precise craftsmanship, and was immediately inspired to work on a special project together with Marc (Creative Director of Lalique).
I see many similarities between our two houses; we share the same vision to bring more beauty into the world.

WW: The La Donna Fall/Winter 2025 collection beautifully translates Brioni’s tailoring heritage into contemporary womenswear. What guided you most as you expanded into this new territory?
NS: The Brioni La Donna collection is based on the same principles as the menswear.
Starting out as a capsule collection for Autumn/Winter 2022/23, it is now established as a standalone line from Autumn/Winter 2024/25.
What I love especially about our womenswear offering is that it is a natural extension of the men’s wear—starting from beautiful tailoring and evolving into more feminine dresses.
All pieces are made in-house by our ateliers in Italy.

WW: Brioni’s recent campaigns have thoughtfully chosen ambassadors who embody the brand’s understated elegance and authenticity. How do such partnerships influence your creative vision?
NS: For me, it’s important to work with someone who is truly representative of their time.
I call it “Living Elegance.” The Brioni wardrobe always underlines the character of the wearer and never overpowers. I always think a good design should feel as if it has always existed, and my work as a designer should remain invisible. The person who wears a Brioni creation should feel a gentle lift.
WW: How does your design philosophy emphasize “quiet elegance” and the emotional connection between the wearer and the garment?
NS: The way I design for Brioni is by reducing as much as possible during the design process.
I start out with many details and always reduce until I arrive at something that feels strong and not overwhelming.
“Brioni continues to honor its tradition of excellence while embracing innovation,”

WW: How does sustainability influence your creative choices—particularly in fabric selection, tailoring, and design—at Brioni?
NS: I see a continued effort in keeping traditional methods alive and at the same time innovate so the brand never stays still. Sustainability is a key part of this evolution.
Brioni continues to honor its tradition of excellence while embracing innovation in every phase of its creative process. The brand is committed to responsible craftsmanship, prioritizing quality, durability, and mindful production, ensuring its creations remain relevant in a world that is evolving. Looking ahead, Brioni’s vision is to remain a symbol of understated luxury, anchored in our heritage but always forward-thinking. Our goal is to continue refining our craftsmanship, embrace sustainability, and evolve with the changing demands of our clients and the world.
