Opposites Attract in Mary Katrantzou’s Latest Collection

No contributor

Over the weekend, designer Mary Katrantzou debuted her fall/winter collection 2016 at Central Saint Martins as part of London Fashion Week. Drawing inspiration from ‘90s Western films alongside cowboy and queen portraits by Andy Warhol, this youthful collection created encounters between opposites with fun clashes of “gendered” fabrics and patterns, all tied together with classic headscarves and dark cupid’s bow lips.

Bright, flashy nylon came together with wispy tulle, embroidered with bold heart-star patterns to create unforgettable designs. Swarovski crystals and furs from Saga Mink added the finishing flairs to this striking geometric collection. Standout pieces included a butterfly blouse with bold outlines, paired with lightweight striped cocktail pants; a leopard-furred long-sleeved dress with stylized flames and flowers; and a sharp patterned dress with edgy zigzags and tessellations, complete with ornate gold embroidery and pointed sleeves.
