We’re looking back on the best events that took place during Frieze Los Angeles.
Official Launch Celebration, Frieze Los Angeles, Getty Villa Museum
Pacific Palisades may be a schlep for most of Los Angeles, but that and the rain didn’t stop people from heading to this coastal museum modeled after the elaborate Villa dei Papiri. The who’s who of the LA art world came out, including LACMA director Michael Govan, and artists Catherine Opie, and Lauren Halsey who watched LA Dance Project perform a movement by Benjamin Millepied in the middle of the opulent courtyard.
Monday Night at The West Hollywood Edition
Those who wanted to stay in town went to The Edition for a trio of events that started with a Deitch Gallery and Autre dinner, followed by the Nota Bene cocktail in the lobby. Those who wanted to dance the night away headed downstairs to Sunset at Edition, where they raged to tracks like “Tainted Love” and “Since You’ve Been Gone” courtesy of Mykki Blanco, before Kembra Pfahler took the stage to close out the night.
Serpentine Americas Foundation 10th Anniversary, Home of Sybil Robson Orr and Matthew Orr
Who doesn’t love a party in the hills? The invitation of the week was definitely for the 10th anniversary of the Serpentine Americas Foundation, held in the opulent home of Sybil Robson Orr and Matthew Orr. Antwaun Sargent, Tyler Mitchell and Lana Del Rey attended the poolside event, where guests played dressup for a photobooth while others mingled beneath the glow of a James Turrell skyspace in the pool house.
Fairclub x Sweet Dreams, NeueHouse Venice Beach
Tolga Albayrak brought his Fairclub, his traveling party that stops at practically every art week around the world, to the west side, setting up shop at NeueHouse Venice Beach. Curators Zoe Lukov and Kaitlin Garcia-Maestas and dealer Lauren Kelly were among those who stopped by after Frieze’s opening day preview.
Awol Erizku x DEPARTAMENTO Frieze LA Party, Signal
LA concept store Departmento — it carries labels like Loewe, Bode, and Wales Bonner — and artist Awol Erizku partnered for a rooftop dance party attended by artists Henry Taylor and Michele Lorusso, Chrome Hearts’s Lynne Sable, and gallerist Thomas Kelly complete with music by Erizku’s DJ persona Due Champ, Alaim de Saracho, and Pollen Source. The two took the idea of schadenfruede (German for happiness at the misfortune of others), making it the theme of the party as well as a limited edition t-shirt featuring an image by Erizku to celebrate their decade-long friendship.
