A Piece of Cloth, Reimagined: ISSEY MIYAKE × Apple Introduce the iPhone Pocket

A study in form, function, and fabric innovation, the new iPhone Pocket merges Apple’s industrial minimalism with ISSEY MIYAKE’s pioneering textile design.

When technology meets textile, design transforms from utility to expression. The newly unveiled iPhone Pocket, a collaboration between ISSEY MIYAKE and Apple, embodies that evolution—an object that’s both wearable and functional, sculptural yet soft. Crafted in Japan using the brand’s signature 3D-knitting techniques, the limited-edition accessory redefines how we carry and interact with our devices, fusing the elegance of fashion with the precision of technology.

A Fusion of Craft and Code

Born from ISSEY MIYAKE’s concept of “a piece of cloth,” the iPhone Pocket is constructed as a single, seamless textile form. Its ribbed, open structure recalls the brand’s iconic pleats, expanding to accommodate an iPhone and other pocketable essentials, while subtly revealing their silhouettes beneath the knit. Available in short- and long-strap versions, it can be worn on the body, tied to a bag, or carried by hand—an adaptable accessory that embodies both movement and modernity.

Behind its simplicity lies complex design thinking. Yoshiyuki Miyamae, Design Director at MIYAKE DESIGN STUDIO, describes the object as a reflection of “the joy of wearing iPhone in your own way.” That phrase perfectly encapsulates the ISSEY MIYAKE ethos: clothes—and by extension, accessories—should empower personal interpretation. Working closely with Apple Design Studio, the teams pursued a shared vision of craftsmanship and universality, producing an object that feels as inevitable as it does inventive.

Design Language in Dialogue

For Apple, this collaboration marks a rare moment when its hardware philosophy enters the world of haute design. “Apple and ISSEY MIYAKE share a design approach that celebrates craftsmanship, simplicity, and delight,” said Molly Anderson, Apple’s Vice President of Industrial Design. The accessory’s recognizable silhouette, she adds, was “intentionally designed to mix and match with all our iPhone models and colors,” encouraging users to personalize their look through color and form.

This interplay between fashion and technology echoes Apple’s long-standing tradition of collaboration—from Hermès’ watch straps to Nike’s performance partnerships—but ISSEY MIYAKE’s involvement brings an avant-garde sensibility rooted in material innovation. The 3D-knit fabrication not only pays homage to the late designer’s fascination with structure and movement but also pushes forward the conversation around wearable tech, emphasizing tactility over circuitry.

The Modern Pocket

In essence, the iPhone Pocket is an act of reduction—an object stripped to its most elemental purpose: to hold, protect, and display. Yet within that minimalism lies emotional resonance. The pleated textile stretches and shifts like fabric in motion, turning the simple act of carrying an iPhone into an aesthetic gesture. The result feels distinctly ISSEY MIYAKE—curious, human, and quietly radical.

The short-strap version comes in eight expressive shades—lemon, mandarin, purple, pink, peacock, sapphire, cinnamon, and black—while the long-strap version is offered in sapphire, cinnamon, and black. Available November 14 at select Apple Stores and online.

Where Fashion Meets Future

As the boundary between fashion and technology continues to blur, collaborations like this underscore a shared design language that values clarity, emotion, and sustainability. The iPhone Pocket’s seamless knit and timeless form embody both brands’ pursuit of longevity—a wearable that doesn’t chase trends but redefines them.

For Apple, it’s a reaffirmation that technology can be beautiful. For ISSEY MIYAKE, it’s proof that innovation in clothing extends far beyond the body. Together, they’ve woven a new kind of relationship between object and owner—a tactile dialogue where “a piece of cloth” becomes an extension of everyday life.
