An Elysian landscape and a warm summer evening provided the perfect setting for the Storm King Art Center’s third annual Summer Solstice Celebration, which took place on June 14. Artists, enthusiasts, curators, and Storm King supporters alike gathered at the Mountainville location to enjoy tours of the exhibitions and grounds before settling down for a gourmet dinner.
One of the world’s major sculpture parks, Storm King presented private tours of their 2014 exhibitions. Currently on view are “Zhang Huan: Evoking Tradition,” a major exhibition of the artist’s work, and “Outlooks: Virginia Overton,” a site-specific project. This season, Storm King also features work from Tony Smith, Barnett Newman, and Louise Nevelson.

In line with its idyllic, natural beauty of the location, dinner featured only regionally- and locally-sourced ingredients. The menu—designed by Peter Hoffman of Back Forty and Shelley Boris of Fresh Company—was also specific to the event as “Evoking Tradition” provided the inspiration. The 230 guests were served family-style, surrounded by sculpture and a starry sky.
Zhang Huan: Evoking Tradition is on view through November 9, 2014 and Outlooks: Virginia Overton is on view through November 30, 2014.
