Avantgarde Refined: The Silent Luxury Hospitality Brand Re-Shaping Turkey

How a family-led hospitality brand is redefining Turkish luxury through restraint, art, and deeply human experiences

From Bodrum to Cappadocia, Avantgarde Refined is quietly recalibrating what luxury looks like in Turkey. The family-owned hospitality brand, founded by İsmet Öztanık, resists spectacle in favor of precision—hotels shaped by their surroundings, grounded in cultural fluency, and defined by a kind of confidence that doesn’t need to announce itself. Across two distinct properties, decades of experience in hospitality, design, and the arts are distilled into spaces where contemporary art, pared-back architecture, and serious food culture feel inevitable rather than staged.

That philosophy comes into focus through what the brand calls “silent luxury”: environments led by atmosphere, not excess; by craft, not ornament. In Bodrum, the Aegean sets the tempo—easy, tactile, and art-forward—paired with a culinary program helmed by Chef Çiğdem Seferoğlu of Istanbul’s Hodan. Her approach to modern Turkish cuisine anchors the hotel’s dining in memory and seasonality, bringing warmth and familiarity without slipping into nostalgia. In Cappadocia, Avantgarde Refined takes a different shape entirely, embedding itself into the region’s cave architecture to create a year-round retreat centered on wellness, reflection, and artistic exchange.

Öztanık and Seferoğlu spoke with Whitewall about building a cohesive, future-facing hospitality and dining vision—one that proves innovation and tradition aren’t opposing forces, but essential partners in Turkey’s evolving luxury landscape.

WHITEWALL: Tell us a bit about your role at Avantgarde Refined today, and how you keep a cohesive atmosphere across all its properties.

İSMET ÖZTANİK: I am the founding soul and heart of the brand, as well as the assembler and platform builder of diverse, complementary ideas and inspirations—championed by passionate, self-esteemed individuals. I represent a four-decade journey of my family company within the hospitality industry as a third-generation member, alongside my brother Cenk, our CEO, and my father Lutfi, our non-executive chairman.

Cohesiveness comes from building your own talent pool and dedicated leadership, and being deeply involved in development, design, and human structuring processes—with real skin in the game. You must create the atmosphere and empower those who protect it, side by side, allowing something magical to emerge.

WW: You’ve worked across hospitality, gastronomy, tech investment, and mentorship. How do those experiences inform your leadership today?

İÖ: Every venture I’ve led has been interconnected behind the scenes, creating natural synergies—sometimes through shared teams, sometimes through acquisitions or vision alignment, and sometimes by shaping entirely new markets. Nearly 15 years in venture capital gave me early insight into emerging economic trends and governance models, which I bring into Avantgarde Refined.

My mentorship work with Generations Y, Z, and now Alpha has deeply informed our HR approach. Together, these perspectives have shaped a brand that is globally attuned yet firmly rooted in local best practice—offering a distinct voice in a competitive landscape.

The Standard of Turkish Hospitality

WW: Avantgarde Refined is redefining Turkish luxury. What does that new narrative look like?

İÖ: Turkish hospitality has long been associated with abundance and generosity, particularly through resort and all-inclusive culture. We don’t reject that legacy—we refine it. Our approach is “less is more,” focusing on intimacy, precision, and emotional resonance. Luxury becomes thoughtful and deeply satisfying, like being welcomed into a home where everything is just enough, yet meaningful.

Storytelling is essential. It allows us to convey warmth, substance, and elegance while creating emotional connections that last beyond the stay.

WW: You describe your design philosophy as “refined minimalism.” How does that manifest in Bodrum versus Cappadocia?

İÖ: Refined minimalism is not replication—it’s adaptation. Its core is simplicity, proportion, and craftsmanship, but each property speaks its own dialect shaped by landscape and history. In coastal or nature-immersed settings, organic textures and natural hues take precedence. In historic structures, preservation leads; in new builds, bespoke stone, wood, and metalwork define contemporary elegance.

What remains constant is balance—a serene, uncluttered atmosphere rooted in a strong narrative. That narrative is always my starting point.

WW: The Bodrum property has a strong contemporary art focus. How do you approach collecting and supporting artists?

İÖ: I’ve been collecting contemporary art since my school days, which inspired the creation of the Avantgarde Collection. We collaborate closely with respected curators while intentionally supporting emerging artists who have talent but lack resources.

Our co-sponsorship of CI Istanbul has been a major influence, and soon we’ll open Creatopia Arts & Culture Centre in Cappadocia with Aysun Öz and Özgür Karaçak—an important next step in supporting artistic production and dialogue.

“We don’t see ourselves simply as hoteliers—we craft moments that linger,”

-İsmet Öztanık.

WW: As an independent, family-owned brand, what advantages does that bring today?

İÖ: Agility. We can operate almost like a garage startup—making fast, precise decisions aligned with the market and the spirit of the time. Unlike global chains that move slowly, we combine long-term family vision with global benchmarking and firsthand observation. We develop our own language, our own methods, and our own pace.

WW: How do you create emotional connections for guests?

İÖ: We don’t see ourselves simply as hoteliers—we craft moments that linger. In Cappadocia, that means honoring its ancient landscape and artistry. In Bodrum, it’s capturing the rhythm of Aegean life. These elements shape cuisine, wellness, art, and human interaction.

The connection happens in quiet moments—a shared glass of wine, a remembered preference, a feeling of belonging. That’s where magic lives.

Authenticity and Connection: The Future of Hospitality

WW: What does the future of luxury hospitality look like to you?

İÖ: In an age of AI and automation, luxury will be defined by what is deeply human—authentic emotion and connection. We stand for silent luxury: intuitive, experience-led, and sincere. The future belongs to places that feel real, rooted, and emotionally resonant.

WW: Çiğdem, tell us about your role in bringing Hodan’s vision to Avantgarde Refined Bodrum.

ÇIĞDEM SEFEROĞLU: Hodan is very much a family business. Together with my sister Didem, my longtime partner Hasan, and our core team, we’ve built something rooted in warmth and trust. Many of our guests spend their summers in Bodrum, so bringing Hodan here felt natural—allowing us to extend that same family feeling during the summer months.

“Younger generations want dishes that connect emotionally but also feel visually engaging,”

-Çiğdem Seferoğlu.

WW: How did you adapt Hodan’s Istanbul menu for Bodrum?

ÇS: Hodan offers a modern interpretation of traditional Turkish cuisine. In Bodrum, seafood dominates the scene, but we wanted to highlight flavors from across Turkey. We curated a menu of personal favorites—dishes that feel comforting yet thoughtful—allowing Bodrum to experience a broader culinary narrative.

WW: Which dishes best represent this approach?

ÇS: Our İçli Köfte is a great example—we combine Antep-style filling with a Central Anatolian technique and finish it with a sour cherry–infused pepper sauce for depth and balance. Another is our artichoke dish: traditionally braised, we bread and fry it, finishing with a fresh salad. Small touches can completely reframe a classic.

WW: How do you keep Turkish cuisine relevant for a global audience?

ÇS: There’s a global return to comforting, home-style food. Turkish cuisine is incredibly rich in that sense. Younger generations want dishes that connect emotionally but also feel visually engaging. That’s where Hodan finds its balance.

Cooking With Place and Memory

WW: How would you describe Istanbul and Bodrum’s food scenes today?

ÇS: Istanbul is layered with history—you can’t imagine it without tarama, lakerda, or kokoreç. Bodrum has a different soul, shaped by its local products: mandarins, tomatoes, Memecik olive oil. We incorporate these elements so guests truly feel where they are.

WW: How does seasonality shape your menus?

ÇS: Turkey’s geography allows us to experience four seasons intensely. Markets and producers are constant sources of inspiration. As chefs, we’re always challenging ourselves to create with what’s fresh and local.

WW: What’s your favorite dish to cook at home?

ÇS: Slow-cooked lamb shoulder with orzo pilaf—shared with friends, alongside a spring salad and good wine.

WW: Where do you like to eat when you’re not in the kitchen?

ÇS: I gravitate toward kitchens that feel like home—places run by friends where comfort and excellence coexist. Fewer places, but truly special ones.
