A rendezvous of taste and scent, the latest Hermessence, Épice Marine, is the creative narrative of two different tastemakers—Jean-Claude Ellena (the “nose”) and Olivier Roellinger (the “pirate chef”).
Épice Marine is the 11th of Hermessence fragrances. Hermessences have been described as haikus; they are perfumes that use raw, intense ingredients to reverberate much more deeply as explorations of nature.
However, Épice Marine takes Hermessence one step further, involving more than the nose. For this particular scent, Ellena sought inspiration from his meeting with renowned chef Olivier Roellinger. Their connection was founded in a mutual enthusiasm for spices, which blossomed into a chronicle that inspired Ellena’s choices and ingredients.
At its soul, Épice Marine is the epic of sailors, pirates and seafarers, seeking to capture the quintessence of the sea. Ellena says he, “wanted to invite you to discover the smells of spices, rum, waxed wooden floors and smoked woods. A sort of escape inspired by the invigorating, stimulating smell of the Brittany coast.”
