Blancpain throws waterfront bash to commemorate Fifty Fathoms

Wednesday night at The Lighthouse overlooking the Hudson River, Blancpain celebrated the 60th anniversary of its Fifty Fathoms collection. For the evening, Blancpain, the world’s oldest watch company, put together an exhibition that traced the history of the collection. The waterfront location morphed into an underwater sanctuary of sorts, cheekily paying tribute to the brand’s diving watch line.
Projected on two massive screens were subaqueous photographs taken by Laurent Ballesta, principal of the Gombessa Project, and Dr. Enric Sala, National Geographic Explorer In-Residence for the Pristine Seas Expedition with Blancpain. Heliummm Aerial Dance and Entertainment Group surprised guests with an acrobatic dance performance, aerially paying tribute to deep-sea divers.

The original Fifty Fathoms model that was introduced in 1953 played a crucial role in the diving world. A second model inspired by the abyssal explorations of Jacques Piccard, the Blancpain Bathyscaphe watch was introduced in the late fifties. Two new interpretations of these models that utilize modern technological innovations are now available for undersea activities.
