Breguet the Innovator: Inventor of the Tourbillon

On Thursday, November 8, Michael Nelson (Breguet’s brand manager) hosted a private cocktail reception at  the Fifth Avenue Breguet store to present and celebrate the end of Breguet’s traveling exhibition “Breguet the Innovator. Inventor of the Tourbillon.” The exhibition, touring in the United States but also in Europe and Asia was inaugurated in Geneva at the beginning of the year.

Enacting as a real showcase for the brand and its legacy, the exhibition presented more than 40 different models of delicate Breguet wristwatches within the store space. One special timepiece, however, got everyone’s particular attention as it was a beautiful tourbillon repeater chronometer from 1812 made by Abraham-Louis Breguet himself. This invaluable piece (the only one known to exist) was introduced at Baselworld this year.

Guests were also treated to a demonstration of Tourbillon mechanism, whose main role is to cancel the consequences of the Earth’s gravitational field, along with its negative effect in the watch precision, making this sophisticated piece a technological challenge “hard to master, yet beautiful to wear” according to Nelson.
