Le Fooding, France’s cheeky response to the Michelin Guide, brought its renegade attitude to the beach for the weekend with a picnic-style, pop-up spot in New York earlier this month. With a DJ set by Cibo Matto and a live performance by New York brass band Friday, “Le Fooding & San Pellegrino Fruitstock at the Rockaways” asked guests to spend the weekend indulging their tastebuds and enjoying the sunshine. After its near destruction by Superstorm Sandy, Beach 97 in the Rockaways has revived its boardwalk food scene with revitalized stalls and shacks. Le Fooding celebrated the revival with the energy and flair we’ve come to expect.
Friday’s menu featured Ivan Orkin of Ivan Ramen’s summer-chilled, lemon shio dashi ramen and cornmeal crostini sopes by Rockaway Taco’s Andrew Field, all paired with Italian-inspired cocktails by Lynnette Marrero. For dessert, Christina Tosi, of Momofuku Milk Bar created grapefruit and cereal milk pudding popsicles.
Other dishes featured throughout the three-day event included grilled veal breast with crispy artichoke, parmesan cream, and dried bonito by Ludo Lefebvre (Trois Mec) and red chilaquiles and burrata by Enrique Olvera (Cosme). Ten percent of each ticket purchased went to benefit Graybeards in its efforts to restore the Rockaways.
