Miami Fête: The NBA’s Art Exhibition, Rashaad Newsome and Swizz Beatz Host the Annual King of Arms Art Ball, and More

With Miami Art Week in full swing, we’re taking a look back at events like the opening of the NBA’s art exhibition, “Momentum,” Rashaad Newsome and Swizz Beatz’s The King of Arms Ball, and more.

On Wednesday, the National Basketball Association (NBA) celebrated the opening of its first art exhibition, presented in collaboration with Franchise and AMP. On view at the hotel Nautilus by Arlo, “Momentum” (open through December 8) explores the relationship between art and basketball culture through a presentation of art surrounding the sport, including works by Andrea Bergart, Andrew Kuo, Eric Elms, Ashley Teamer, and Devin Troy Strother.

Later in the day, The Dean Collection’s Swizz Beatz and Oolite Arts presented Rashaad Newsome’s live experience, The King of Arms Art Ball at the Soho House Miami Beach Tent. The ball, which first began in 2013 as a platform for the LGBTQ+ community, has celebrated the work of artists of color like Zanele Muholi, Nick Cave, and Mickalene Thomas. The artists are judged in categories throughout various disciplines of pageantry and performance in an space that creates a safe and welcoming environment, clear from the gender binaries that are often associated with the ballroom.

And that evening, Phillips and The Bass Museum of Art hosted a celebratory dinner at Mr. Chow honoring Lara Favaretto and her commission Gummo VI, which will join The Bass’ permanent collection. Attendees included hosts Vivian Pfeiffer and Silvia Karman Cubiñá and guests like Mera and Don Rubell, Laure Hériard Dubreuil, Sarah Arison, Lily Kwong, Polina Proshkina, Rodman Primack, and Andrea Glimcher.
