Last month, Polaroid unveiled two new colorways for its fan-favorite Polaroid Go model in black and red. Special for its debut was a colorful campaign captured in Tenerife, Spain by two creators that embrace creativity and multi-disciplinary work in the arts. First, we saw both moody and vibrant images by Ibby Njoya, an artist and set designer, who appeared in some and showed off the camera in others. Then, we caught sight of photos by the fashion designer, DJ, blogger, and actress, Miranda Makaroff, which caught our eyes with playful colors and exaggerated poses.
“The Polaroid Go has portability and the spirit of exploration in its DNA. We’ve seen an incredible response for this new camera format so we wanted to introduce even more ways for people to dive deeper into their creativity, while making it easy for them to go anywhere and capture whenever inspiration hits,” Oskar Smolokowski, Polaroid CEO, said.
To celebrate the launch of the new cameras, Whitewall spoke with Makaroff about photographing special moments on film, her first Polaroid moment, and what she’s working on next.
WHITEWALL: You recently starred in Polaroid’s campaign for its new Go Black and Red cameras. How do you feel when using a Polaroid camera rather than an iPhone or another digital camera?
MIRANDA MAKAROFF: There is something so magical about shooting with analog that can’t be described by words. It’s about transforming a moment and capturing special memories into something physical that you can keep forever.
WW: For the campaign, you traveled to Spain to show off your creative vision. What was that like? What did you want to show?
MM: We went to a place in Spain that I didn’t know before and I was so excited to discover it that I almost exploded with happiness. I wanted to show my creative side and also be myself as much as I could. Working with the Polaroid team was just an incredible experience that I will keep in my heart.
WW: Do you remember your first Polaroid moment?
MM: Yes of course. I was working for Jaggermaister when I got my first Polaroid camera and I hated the job so much, but thank God they gave us Polaroid cameras so I could start taking pictures—which now I love. It’s becoming another passion of mine!
WW: You’re a fashion designer, DJ, writer, and actress. How would you describe your practice?
MM: I think I am more an artist; that is how I see myself. I love to paint and create and also decorate spaces and do photography. I love doing different things all the time. It amuses me so much.
WW: How would you describe your personal style?
MM: Very eclectic, fun, and crazy. Also full of colors and joy.
WW: You’re very active on social media. Who are your favorite people to follow right now?
MM: I like many artists! My favorites now are Amanda Wall, Filip Custic, Maya Golyshkina, John Yuyi, and Juno Birch.
WW: What are you working on now?
MM: I am working on a couple of exhibitions and also doing a big piece for Salone Mobile in Milan. Really
excited to create art.
