Whitewaller New York is out this week for The Salon Art + Design Fair (November 9-13) and the fall contemporary auctions next week. In the issue, we’re sharing insider tips on where to eat, sip, see art, have fun, and relax during this busy art season, from David Galperin, Assistant Vice President and Head of the Contemporary Art Evening Auctions at Sotheby’s New York.
WHERE TO EAT AND SIP
Nothing makes me happier than a cheeseburger and a dirty martini—with extra olives—at either The Odeon or Long Island Bar. Also, you can’t beat the fried arroz negro at Estela, a dish that goes down just as well for brunch as it does for dinner.
WHERE TO SEE ART
Depends on what part of the city you’re in! In terms of galleries, my favorite programs to check out are Matthew Marks in Chelsea, JTT and Bureau on the Lower East Side, the Petzel space on the Upper East Side, Gavin Brown in Harlem, and Cleopatra’s in Brooklyn. Beyond that, some of the places to see the most thoughtful, relevant, and challenging exhibitions are Sculpture Center, Artist’s Space (when it reopens in its new space), and the lobby gallery of the Whitney Museum.
WHERE TO HAVE FUN AND RELAX
The Judd Foundation at 101 Spring is a perpetual source of relaxation and inspiration for me.
