Panerai Sets Sail in the Classic Yachts Challenge

By Eliza Jordan

June 22, 2015

Recently, Panerai welcomed sailboat lovers and watch collectors alike to the Surrey Hotel to kick off the North American circuit of their Classic Yachts Challenge (PCYC), and to celebrate a few beloved timepieces of their own.

North American President Rafael Alvarez welcomed guests to an entertaining kick-off hour full of light bites, Italian cocktails, and live jazz music before ushering them inside for a quick, informative presentation on the essence of sailing by PCYC Chairman Bill Doyle.

In 1936, when Panerai began crafting pieces for the Royal Italian Navy, it began to prove itself as being a brand full of functionality, determination, and prestige. It is without a doubt that for over 150 years, Panerai has displayed its utmost respect for Italian design and Swiss technology by creating unique pieces of time-telling excellence.

The PCYC North American circuit, we learned, is comprised of the Corinthian Classic Yacht Regatta (August 8-9 in Marblehead, MA.), the Opera House Cup (August 16 in Nantucket, MA.), and the Museum of Yachting Classic Yacht Regatta (September 5-6 in Newport, RI.), and this is the 11th anniversary of Officine Panerai’s title sponsorship of the challenge.

Since 2006, Panerai has been celebrating its North American sector by bringing together captains and crews from some of the world’s most magical sailing vessels for three weekends of New England sailing, skill sharing, and competition. With approximately 50-60 boats from around the world attending this competition, the stakes are high (but more so fun), as they compete to be the best performing boat in each regatta. Prizes range, but the ultimate prize does not—a classic Panerai timepiece is offered to the winner.

PCYC beautifully the love of watchmaking with the love of sailing. Timepieces that are equipped with linear power reserve indicators that are water resistant and more, were viewable in showcases throughout the top floor of the hotel. One in particular, the 59 mm PAM00446 Pocket Watch Tourbillon GMT Ceramica, is a sight for a sailor’s eye. Its oversized black matte frame, lengthy pocket-watch handling strap, and bold clasp allows for the top spot on any yacht captain’s wish-list.
