The new UC Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAMPFA) museum and theater saw a successful opening four-day long celebration last week, that began on Thursday with a grand opening gala, dubbed “Portal.” A crowd of over 900 people were on hand to admire the twisting slants of the stainless steel roof and the sweeps of large glass paneling ofr the Diller Scofidio + Renfro-designed space.
The evening was hosted by BAMPFA Director Lawrence Rider and included “Portal” as well as an afterparty, “House,” entertaining guests with house “old and new” music, sponsored by Uber and San Francisco Magazine.

Guests like Albert Brooks, Jeffrey Fraenkel, Katy Grannan, Stephan Jenkins, Pamela Joyner, Barry McGee & Clare Rojas, Rita Moreno, Tom Sachs, Dave Eggers, and Joel Wachs were welcomed with lengthy buffet tables, remarks by Chancellor Nicholas B. Dirks, and walls and galleries showcasing captivating works of art and film.
