On the night of Tuesday, June 6, guests celebrated Ian Schrager’s PUBLIC at 215 Chrystie Street in New York with a pre-opening party. The new hotel includes the three diverse bars and the new PUBLIC Arts space, launched this week with a surprise performance by none other than Patti Smith.
On Wednesday, the Herzog & de Meuron-designed building officially opened its doors. Whitewall was on site for a press briefing in Jean-Georges’ PUBLIC Kitchen, and got a tour of the hotel rooms for future guests.
That night brought yet another exciting performance where Jonah Bokaer premiered a site-specific dance in a one-night-only show. Hosted by Diana Widmaier Picasso, “Bowery Myths” by Bokaer highlighted the architecture of PUBLIC, executed by dancers from Jonah Bokaer Choreography (Reed Tankersley, Betti Rollo, Laura Gutierreze, James McGinn, James Koroni, Callie Nichole Lyons, and Tal Adler Arieli), costumed by Joshua Katcher from BraveGentleman, with music produced by Paul D. Miller—better known as DJ Spooky.
In the company of guests like Jeffrey Deitch, Stefan Golangco, Shala Monroque, Molly McDaniel, Jeanelle Lee, Tatyana Murray, Lauren Kelly, Michael Shore, Julia Race, Sarah Levine, Meredith Kelly and Tripple Edwards, attendees engaged in a festive night, accompanied by video works by Bokaer.
