Severine Tatangelo’s Best of L.A. Art Week: Night Gallery, The Future Perfect, and More

The French architect Severine Tatangelo sat down with Whitewall to discuss her favorite events during this year's edition of L.A. Art Week.

The French architect Severine Tatangelo, founder of Studio PCH, is known for effortlessly blending the beauty of nature with thoughtful design. From hotels and restaurants to recording studios and homes, Tatangelo’s projects create a seamless connection between people and their surroundings. Drawing inspiration from the coastal landscapes of California—from Venice to Malibu along the Pacific Coast Highway, as her company’s name suggest—she brings the natural beauty of L.A. into every project she takes on.

After attending this year’s edition of Frieze Week, Tatangelo recaps with Whitewall her favorite events, exhibitions, moments, and more.

WHITEWALL: What were the best events during Art Week?

SEVERINE TATANGELO: The Future Perfect threw some of the best events, with David, the owner, capturing the essence of Frieze beautifully. He hosted a breakfast, a silent auction supporting firefighters, and a book signing with the wonderful Nicole Hollis—all seamlessly curated. The event was an immersive experience, a perfect convergence of art, design, and philanthropy, and a truly meaningful way to support the LA Fire Department. The Future Perfect is also fantastic to work with. Having recently collaborated with Olivia Cognet on a fireplace, it was especially rewarding to see Frieze art-goers gathering around it, enjoying the moment.

WW: What were the best shows of Art Week?

ST: This is a tough one—everybody delivered! Chris Burden’s immersive installation at Gagosian was outstanding. Claire Tabouret’s show at Night Gallery was fantastic. Blum was probably my favorite, and Perrotin fed my French soul. It’s exciting to see L.A.’s art scene thriving, with strong support for local artists.

WW: What was your favorite moment?

ST: Witnessing the overwhelming support for Los Angeles—both for the firefighters and the local artists who lost everything in the fires. Many artists and galleries stepped up, donating artwork and organizing events to aid recovery. Seeing the community come together through art to help rebuild was incredibly moving. Something beautiful always emerges from the dark. It even made all the time spent in traffic worth it!

WW: What was the best surprise of Art Week?

ST: It was an honor to co-host an event with Boffi on Restoration and Resilience. The event came together in just a few weeks, with everyone generously offering their time. The featured speakers had a deeply moving conversation about the future of LA, art, and architecture—I expect it was just the beginning of a much larger dialogue. Galleries outside of Frieze stepped up with incredible openings and exhibitions. The energy in these independent spaces was fantastic. It was a pleasant surprise to see art-goers exploring the city—hopping between showrooms, dining out, and fully embracing the scene. After a rough start to the year in LA, this weekend of collaborations felt much needed.

WW: Where was the best vibe?

ST: I’m always so inspired when I’m at the MAK Center Schindler House. It’s a magical space. They tie with Future Perfect 🙂

WW: What was the best discovery you made at Art Week?

ST: The Panafold is a brand-new publication, and during Frieze, I had the chance to contribute an interview for their upcoming issue. Their event in Atwater was vibrant—great people, delicious food and drinks, all spread across three floors in the stunning Kalon Showroom. I’m excited to see what they do next, as they have a fan in me.

This marks the artist’s third solo show with the gallery, following Eclipse (2017) and The Pull of the Sun (2020). The exhibition coincides with the announcement that Tabouret has been commissioned by French President Emmanuel Macron and Paris Archbishop Laurent Ulrich to design six new stained glass windows for the iconic Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.
