Last week, at Art Basel, a private dinner was held at Kunstmuseum Basel. The dinner was hosted by Tina Brown, Daphne Guinness, Dasha Zhukova, and Urs Rohner, chairman of Credit Suisse. The evening was preceded by an interview between Brown, the editor of Newsweek and The Daily Beast, and artist Theaster Gates.
Gates, who had an exhibition at Art Basel Unlimited this year, was chosen as the subject of the evening for his extraordinary work in Chicago, known as the “Dorchester Project.” The project is an ongoing rehabilitation of the depressed neighborhood on Chicago’s West Side. BNKUDRWTR, Gates’ installation at Basel Unlimited, serves as an extension of the “Dorchester Project” as it features a bank’s sign and teller window obtained during its gutting.
