It’s been a long winter here in New York, so the arrival of spring, and therefore Frieze New York 2018, is very welcome.
The fair returns to Randall’s Island with over 190 galleries. Whitewaller checked in with Loring Randolph, the fair’s artistic director, about some exciting programming debuting this year. That includes a brand-new performance section called “Live,” as well as a curated exhibition by Matthew Higgs entitled “For Your Infotainment.”

In our Up Close section, we also speak with artists like Yinka Shonibare MBE, who has a public work on view at Freedman Plaza in Central Park and will have a major installation in the inaugural FRONT triennial in Cleveland this summer. We also chat with Carroll Dunham about his current Gladstone Gallery exhibition and with Erez Nevi Pana about his spiritually and environmentally focused show at Friedman Benda this spring. In addition, we hear from Lucas Zwirner, designer Todd Snyder, and chef Daniel Humm.
We’re thrilled to have as our guest editor for this edition the executive director of Art Production Fund, Casey Fremont. A native New Yorker, she is the perfect person to share her side of the city, as well as what she’s looking forward to seeing this spring.

We also have New York–specific recommendations for what to see, do, eat, and more from Insiders like Alexandra Morris, Danny Baez, Landis Smithers, Nazy Nazhand, Odile Hainaut and Claire Pijoulat, Rafael Cárdenas, Laura Currie and Danielle Mayer, and Alexandre Assouline.
Plus, we’ve got all the information you need to know about this spring’s fairs, including Frieze New York, 1:54, TEFAF New York Spring, WantedDesign, and ICFF; the museums and gallery shows that are not to miss this May; and the bars, restaurants, and hotels for those in town for Frieze New York and New York Design Week.

Come on, spring!
