For the very first time, the Belgian designer Dries Van Noten is releasing under his eponymous label a new line of beauty products and accessories. To start, lipsticks and fragrances are available with sustainability at top of mind, encased in refillable and collectible vestibules, deadstock pouches, and recyclable packaging. For both the lipstick cases and fragrance bottles, sustainable materials were used, including glass, aluminum, and PEFC® certified wood from sustainably managed forests. Drawstring bags—made from upcycled fabrics from previous fashion collections—are used to encapsulate the products.
Similar to how the designer channels the emotions customers feel when wearing a garment in various environments, he wanted to evoke that sensory experience with fragrance. Inspired by a walk in his home garden, located near Antwerp, Van Noten invited an array of perfumers in to co-create olfactive universes guided by their own creative visions.
Names like Neon Orange by Fanny Bal, Raving Rose by Luise Turner, Cannabis Patchouli by Nicolas Bonneville, and Soie Malaquais by Marie Salamagne caught our attention. “The rose is an icon for Dries but I wanted to disrupt its classicism to create a rose that is not a rose, not taking itself too seriously, ultra-modern and spicy,” said Turner of her creation.
Other genderless fragrances—made from 80-plus percent natural origin ingredients and held within bottles inspired by apothecary vials—followed, leading the public down a path of modernity and tradition mixed with a new rule-breaking spirit. For a seamless refilling experience, bottles feature a key to unlock the cap and a personalized funnel for dispensing.
“Inspired by The Dries Van Noten Parisian boutique with its elegant and precious textures, the eclectic
and mystical atmosphere, that reigns gave inspired the idea of an adorned myrrh,” added Amélie Jacquin of her fragrance, Rock The Myrrh. “It is here, an overdose of myrrh is joined by resins of benzoin and cistus dressed up with delights of cypress and pink pepper.”
To complement these eaux de colognes, a selection of soap bars and scented creams are offered. Formulated with rosehip oil, shea butter, almond oil, and natural antioxidants, creams are offered in Neon Garden, Cannabis Patchouli, and Soie Malaquais scents. Soaps—available in two fragrances, Raving Rose and Rock the Myrrh—reference traditional beauty, also created with rosehip oil.
The beauty collection continues into the world of makeup, next with lipstick. Now with over 100 fashion shows under his belt, the designer has worked with some of the world’s top makeup and hair artists from around the globe, translating into a signature makeup aesthetic of his own. The balance of elegance and surprise we see in his shows and campaigns is seen in the new line, offered in 5 satin shades, 10 matte shades, 5 sheer shares, and 1 transparent lip balm.
Like the fragrances, the lipsticks are enriched with rosehip oil for added moisture and are offered within four refillable cases, too: Coral Ceramic, Neon Print, Malachite Snake, and Clockwork Leather. For the artists out there, Van Noten is also debuting a lip brush, made from synthetic hairs, to aid in the application process and its resulting precision.
Ahead of launching a complete collection for the face, eyes, and nails soon, Van Noten also reveals a selection of small accessories to join the lipsticks and perfumes. Seen are pochettes in calf leather and a printed base; Italian resin mirror cases, available in contrasting calf leather cases of colors and prints; and wide-tooth Italian resin combs, offered in blue marble and yellow, tortoiseshell print, and pink.
