Today we’re talking with the artist and designer, Jaime Hayon. Hayon’s solo exhibition, “Bestial” is currently on view at Mindy Solomon Gallery in Miami. Well known for his design, interiors, and sculptural practice—this show stands out for its focus on his painting practice.
Hayon’s paintings, while a surprise to some, fit right along with the rest of the world he’s created throughout his now decades-long career. Full of movement, color, passion, and playfulness, they follow a language all his own.
Hayon’s creativity first gained notice in the skateboarding culture, where art could live anywhere—on a deck, on a t-shirt, on a hat, on a shoe. His foray into the decorative arts saw him collaborating and revering top craftspeople around the world—from Japan to Poland, and from Spain to Italy. He describes himself as a Renaissance man, in the spirit of Dali. He’s created his own universe that is constantly expanding, brimming with joy and enthusiasm.
We spoke with the artist from his home in Valencia where he was hiding out from his kids in the bathroom, so forgive us if the audio is a bit echo-y. We do what we have to! We talk about his show at Mindy Solomon, the progression of little Jaime to Grandpa Jaime, how a group of monks helps to keep him grounded, the possibility of a future opera, and why he’s never afraid to start from zero.
Notable Insights:
“There is no safe here, it’s always about trying something that challenges us. Our best customer is someone that wants to challenge us and challenge themselves. This is the only way we work.”
“I’m someone that is looking for his own world, creating his own language and building it up with craftsmanship and with amazing people around.”
“Creativity is what can change the world today. Creative minds see behind the curtain, they see more because they’re questioning constantly what’s happening.”
“We’re humans and we need interactions. If you want to think in a different way, you need to talk. Everything comes from conversations.”
“I wake up every day thinking: this is an extraordinary day to do something that was never done, to fuck up and to do something very weird.”
