While Kugimiya’s previous work has largely focused on creating stop-motion animation, this exhibition reveals a shift in her perspective and showcases a new body of work, narrative paintings of the East River in New York where she currently lives.

“By Proxy” is an exhibition of the instances when an idea needs more than just an artist to take form. Marcel Duchamp called it “aesthetic osmosis,” the process by which an artist, through an artwork, transfers responsibility and agency to a viewer. The exhibition will include artists incorporating work from the past century to the present day. Artists include Francis Alÿs, Alighiero Boetti, John Cage, Marcel Duchamp, Wade Guyton, Oliver Laric, Lee Mingwei, Sol LeWitt, Yoko Ono, Jon Rafman, Mariah Robertson, Siebren Versteeg, and Xu Zhen.

Claude Rutault at Galerie Perrotin

Galerie Perrotin presents a collection of works by Claude Rutault, the artist’s first solo exhibition in America following four-decades of prominent and influential practice in France. Rutault’s work, beginning with a 1974 show staged at the office of a Parisian psychoanalyst has consistently approached painting as a social practice embedded in the living relationships between artwork, artist, gallery, collector, museum, and auction house.

Mary Temple: “true enough” at Mixed Greens

For “true enough,” Temple debuts lush paintings on canvas and panel—text based abstractions embedded with philosophical and political phrases culled from cultural observation. Temple’s vibrant new work fills the gallery with color as each piece unfolds in layered narratives based on themes of trust, truthfulness, transparency, and doubt.

Andy Warhol: “1950s Drawings” at Anton Kern Gallery

“Andy Warhol: 1950s Drawings”brings together 150 never before seen works on paper from the late 1940s through 1960. They show Warhol as a skilled draftsman and great experimenter. Using ink and graphite, Warhol investigated the possibilities of the hand-drawn line, and in the course of this developed his characteristic blotted-line technique, which involved tracing projected photographic images on to paper and blotting the inked figures to create variations on a theme.

Kara Walker: “Afterword” at Sikkema Jenkins Co.

“Afterword” elaborates on the creation and aftermath of Kara Walker’s monumental installation at the Domino Sugar Refinery in Williamsburg, Brooklyn this past summer. The exhibition was inspired and embedded with the history of sugar and the sugar trade, the focus of which was a colossal, sugar-coated sphinx-like figure that presided over the cavernous, 30,000-square foot space.

Charles Atlas: “Turning” at Luhring Augustine

“Turning,” based on a critically acclaimed tour of Europe by Antony and Charles Atlas, is a music documentary that explores the heart of performance. Through its synthesis of Antony’s songs and unfurling video portraiture of the 13 remarkable women who performed on stage, “Turning” creates an intimate and cinematic experience exploring themes of identity, transcendence and the revelation of essence.

Lynette Yiadom-Boakye: “The Love Within” at Jack Shainman Gallery

“The Love Within” is the artist’s third solo exhibition with Jack Shainman Gallery, which will include new oil paintings on canvas and occupy both Chelsea locations. Yiadom-Boakye was born in 1977 in London where she lives and works today. She attended Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, Falmouth College of Arts and the Royal Academy Schools.

Sam Samore: “Accumulation of Shapes (Part One)” at Team Gallery

For his third solo exhibition with the gallery, Sam Samore presents a new series of portraits of the French actress Juliette Dol. Each work consists of two images, apparently sequenced a few frames apart, which are cropped and then joined together with a narrow black line of separation.

Andreas Schulze: “Traffic Jam” at Team Gallery

Andreas Schulze has turned his focus to a single modern design typology: the automobile. On each of the gallery’s three walls hangs a series of starkly colored, larger-than-life paintings of cars. Schulze, who is perhaps best known for immersive, spatially transformative installations, both acknowledges and destabilizes our existing pictorial understandings of quotidian objects.
