Behind plush velvet curtains, lies an intimate space that evokes the glamour of the Great  Gatsby. Influenced by the secretive charm of the prohibition era, this speakeasy-esque bar was anointed North America’s best bar in 2024 and features a basement bar that exudes Mexican spirit. Creating a secluded haven to enjoy with company, or simply for the pleasure of a quality beverage. The cocktail list, curated by head bartender Eric Van Beek, offers a minimal selection, at first glance. When taking a closer look, each cocktail is complex, both in creation and flavor. Created using advanced culinary techniques, the process of producing each refreshment may be considered a labor of love, often taking over 48 hours to craft, from beginning to end.

What we love: Taking pictures of each cocktail with a beautiful Gatsby inspired background.

Masala y Maíz

Juarez

Each one of Masala y Maíz’s dishes tells a story about the migration of people, culinary techniques, ingredients, cultural food ways and political movements between South Asia, East Africa, and Mexico. Chefs Norma Listman and Saqib Keval spent years researching and reimagining the organic merging of their cultures—shared flavors and histories of colonization and displacement—into mestizo, or blended, food. Their dishes embody this cultural intersection, showcasing intensely personal family recipes and histories in a way that feels authentic and unforced.  The restaurant features a seasonally changing menu of organic produce and sustainable seafood and proteins sourced from small farms near Mexico City. Beyond just creating delicious food, Listman and Keval are committed to advocating for better labor conditions in the food industry, offering dream working conditions for their staff, farmers, and purveyors. Masala y Maíz stands as a testament to the chefs’ use of their platform to effect positive change. In addition to regular breakfast, lunch, and brunch services, the chefs also host private dinners, cooking classes, and lectures, reflecting their belief in the power of food as a tool for environmental and social justice.

What we love: Pairing the Camarones Pa’Pelar with a glass of white wine and good conversation in the intimate dining room designed by activist artist Pedro Reyes.
