Visitors at The Metropolitan Museum of Art will want to be sure to wander up to the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Roof Garden, where they’ll find Alex Da Corte’s 2021 Roof Garden Commission, As Long as the Sun Lasts. On view through October 31, 2021, the sculptural installation combines a big blue bird reminiscent of the Sesame Street character with a large mobile-like structure referencing the work of Alexander Calder. With Big Bird perched on a crescent moon, ladder in hand, the playful sculpture moves with the wind, set against the New York City skyline, suggesting an introspective narrative on transformation and the illusion of stability.
