Amoako Boafo’s premier solo museum presentation “Soul of Black Folks” is open at San Francisco’s Museum of the African Diaspora (MoAD) through February 27. Through more than 20 works made in the last four years, the presentation highlights the many ways the Ghanian artist captures Black individuals and themes like Black joy, Black subjectivity, and the Black gaze. Titled for a text by W.E.B. Du Bois, which looked at the life of Black individuals behind constructs of race, Boafo’s exhibition poses viewers with questions surrounding agency in cultivating one’s own narrative and cultural expression.
