Amy Sherald: The World We Make

From October 12—December 23, Amy Sherald’s first-ever solo exhibition in Europe is on view at Hauser & Wirth’s London gallery, filling the entirety of its presentation spaces. Titled “The World We Make,” Sherald’s new works continue her acclaimed practice in scales ranging from intimate to monumental, which follow the artist’s exploration of traditions of portraiture that immortalize moments of humanity and beauty in the lives of her Black subjects. Too long removed from the Western art historical canon and its portraits, Sherald’s works reinserts Black subjects into this narrative through scenes both of the artist’s own imagination and in recreations of iconic moments, like For love, and for country, which looks to Alfred Eisenstaedt’s 1945 photograph of a couple embracing, V-J Day in Times Square.
