Design Miami/ Basel 2022

The 16th edition of Design Miami/ Basel is open June 14—19, welcoming close to 20 first-time presenters among more than 50 participating galleries. In this 2022 edition, fairgoers will find the finest in design both past and contemporary looking at the theme “The Golden Age,” seen across sectors including Galleries, Curios, and Podium, and accompanied by other events and happenings.

Those in attendance can expect to find presentations from galleries like Galerie Eric Philippe, Galerie Matthieu Richard, Galerie Meubles et Lumières, Thomas Fritsch-ARTRIUM, Galerie Pascal Cuisinier, Galerie Patrick Seguin, Galerie SCENE OUVERTE, and Jousse Entreprise, Todd Merrill Studio, Thomsen Gallery, Friedman Benda, Hostler Burrows, Morentz Gallery, Pierre Marie Giraud, Guelfucci Gallery, Dimoregallery, and Galleria Rossella Colombari.

Bringing viewers a curated selection of design objects up for sale, the Podium sector comes to the fair’s Basel iteration for the first time. Here, visitors will find pieces on view with the likes of GARRIDO, co/rizom, Galleri Feldt, Marie Piselli, Morentz, and Lebreton. And making up the Curio sector are 17 presentations that put a focus on innovative interpretations of design traditions—like FAINA’s UN/TAMED, which features a suite of goat-inspired pieces expanding on a childhood memory of founder Victoria Yakusha; Toshiya Hayashi and Hokuto Ando’s We+ tracing the relationship between humans and materials back to their origins; and WKND Lab, who is highlighting traditional Korean craftsmanship and materials.

Other things to look out for include Superblue’s special project Pulse Topology, which greets fairgoers at the entrance with a work by the Mexican-Canadian artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, featuring an installation made up of 6,000 different lightbulbs; and Joseph Walsh Studio’s Material Culture, inspired by the grace of nature. And finally, the Talks program, organized with a hybrid virtual/in-person format, will include highlights like Anne-Laure Pingreoun (the Founder of Alter-Projects) moderating the discussion “New Artistic Models in the Modern Golden Age;” Maria Cristina Didero leading a conversation between Misha Kahn, Alexander von Vegesack, and Mathias Schwartz-Clauss on “Collecting Objects, Collecting Experiences;” and “Forgotten Design of the 1980s: Why Is This Movement So Popular Now?,” which will be moderated by Adam Štech.
