An exhibition of works by Sharif Waked exploring notions of appropriation, translation and the juncture between image and text is currently on view at Kunsthaus Baselland. Sharif Waked is known for playfully juxtaposing different positions and narratives, and generating paradoxical and absurd encounters to investigate cultural and political moments in present and past histories. “Halftones” features independent works and pieces from Waked’s series Arabesque and Just a Moment. In the exhibition viewers will find Just A Moment No. 4 (Away From You) (2011), which follows the diva Umm Kulthum, singing her iconic song Away From You (1965), MoM – Museum of Mosul (2017) and Beace Brocess No. 5 (2012). On view is also a site specific architectural intervention serving as the display device for 2 works: Bath Time (2012) on one side and Just A Moment No. 21 (Shit) (2018) on the other. Throughout the works in the exhibition, the artist questions the division between the visual and the verbal, perception and deception, the visual traditions of the past and the digital manipulations of the present.
