Derrick Adams: Patrick Kelly, The Journey

In “Patrick Kelly, The Journey,” the artist Derrick Adams dives into the archives of the late fashion designer, Patrick Kelly, who was the first American in the Chambre Syndicale du prêt-à-porter for the French ready-to-wear industry. Researching the life and work of Kelly at New York’s Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, Adams created a body of work surrounding the designer’s sketches, photographs, letters, and other materials uncovered in the archives. Curated by Alexandra Sachs, the works on view take the form of a series of abstracted collages and sculptural works, made with and inspired by the clothing patterns, fabrics, and embellishments found in Kelly’s oeuvre.
