Open through July 25 at The Modern Museum of Art Forth Worth, “FOCUS: Wael Shawky” features a film from the artist’s Cabaret Crusades trio presented with a selection of related sculpture and drawings. In an exploration of the ambiguity between history and myth, the artist looks at themes like medieval hostilities between Christians and Muslims, the history of the Arab peninsula, and the retelling of poetic mythology through the use of fantastical narratives enacted by marionettes. Imagined through a blend of fact and fiction, the works on view challenge the authority of history while remaining simultaneously engaged with the present.
