Concerned with post-colonial and post-apartheid societies and the histories and experiences of Black, brown, femme, and queer life, the artist Gabrielle Goliath creates immersive environments that seek moments of beauty and poetry in the midst of navigating difficult realities. On view at Kunsthaus Baselland until July 17, the Johannesburg-based artist’s presentation “This song is for …” is an experience centering on a two-channel video, meant to inspire empathy and transformation. Alongside the titular video work, viewers can expect to find the most recent extension of Goliath’s poignant photographic series Berenice, which features images capturing surrogate stand-ins for a childhood friend of the artist who was killed as the result of domestic violence, continuing the Goliath’s mission of finding beauty “in spite of.”
