The latest installation in Ghada Amer’s most recent series of paintings, “The Women I Know Part II” is a suite of painted and embroidered portraits exploring the exchange between artist, subject, and viewer. Open at Marianne Boesky Gallery’s 507 West 24th Street location, Amer began the featured works by first photographing her subjects—a collection of friends, family, and close collaborators—then drawing their portraits, before painting over and embroidering them. Taking on a feminist stance in the male-dominated world of painting, Amer’s subjects have been largely covered by the embroidery threads and colorful phrases like “Men are taught to apologize for their weaknesses, women for their strengths”.
