“Spectrum,” the first solo exhibition in Hong Kong by Josh Sperling, is now on view at Perrotin through June 12. The artist defies conventional definitions of sculpture and painting through his conceptualization of two signature forms, “squiggles” and “double bubbles.” These hybrid pieces are created by precisely stretching canvas over stepped plywood in the desired shapes. “Illusion is also very important to me: the underlying structure gives the illusion of something, it is mysterious,” said Sperling.
