On view at Ben Brown Fine Arts is “Grand Tour,’’ an exhibition that brings together some of Vik Muniz’s most evocative and celebrated series of works. Known for his unique use of materials—including dust, sugar, diamonds, caviar, toys, magazine shreds—Muniz reconstructs familiar images, inviting the viewer to dive into its subconscious visual archive and reconsider the modified imagery. The artist then photographs his creations and plays with their scale, resulting in a documentation of his artistic and conceptual processes. For the exhibition, Muniz produced whimsical images inspired by old postcards of the Shanghai Skyline, the Great Wall and Fan Fransisco’s Golden gate Bridge, as well as a world map made entirely from raw pigment, amongst other re-imagined pictures of diverse subjects. Altogether, the images in the exhibition take the viewer on a fantasy ‘grand tour,’ through time, art history, international cities and Muniz’s imaginative and ingenious oeuvre.
