BEST OFF-THE-BEATEN-PATH PLACE TO SEE ART
I live around the corner from The Wallace Collection and often stop by on my way to or back from work. It has a great collection of 18th century French art, but also has great 17th and 19th century paintings, medieval and renaissance works of art, and a unique collection of arms and armours. Another favourite is Kenwood House, hidden in the middle of Hampstead Heath. The private collection and former home of Lord Iveagh (Edward Cecil Guiness) was given to the nation in 1928. The collection highlights are: an incredible late self portrait by Rembrandt (c.1665); The Guitar Player (c.1672) by Johannes Vermeer; and major paintings by Gainsborough, Reynolds, and Van Dyck.

For contemporary art, I like Union Pacific on Goulston Street by Grace Schofield and Nigel Dunkley, who run a truly radical program. They’re showing Japanese ceramicist Urara Tsuchiya this fall.
