To hear about his top spots in Los Angeles, Whitewaller spoke with Richard Christiansen, Founder of Flamingo Estate.

FAVORITE SPOT IN THE CITY TO FIND INSPIRATION
Mother Nature will always be our best teacher, therapist and friend. So I draw lots of inspiration from nature, especially here in the city. I regularly go on hikes. I surf in Malibu and visit the Huntington Library Gardens. And of course my own garden and orchard.

BEST-KEPT SECRET IN LOS ANGELES
The Self Realization Center in Pacific Palisades. It houses a secret garden and lake. The Center celebrates every religion, with self meditation being the driving force for a visit. Attending is a ritual in itself and well needed in Los Angeles to escape the madness. There’s also a similar one near the Estate in Mt Washington which is lost in time. It’s such a surprise.

FAVORITE OFF-THE-BEATEN-PATH DESTINATION
Ojai without a doubt. It’s a small town with the best organic food, making it a great getaway from city noise. There’s a beautiful abundant Australian nursery that reminds me of home.

BEST PLACE TO SEE ART
The best places to see art are the Getty Villa and the Norton Simon Museum. Both museums feature amazing gardens that are balanced with paintings and sculptures, making the spaces a true testament to craft, creativity, and nature.

WHAT MAKES LA SPECIAL
Growing up in rural Australia, I was exposed to the different terrains my country had to offer. Whether it was the coast or more inland, there’s beauty to be found. Los Angeles is a city that provides that same contrast. Give or take, I’m a drive away from any desired landscape—the water, desert, mountains, a nice meal, isolation. The city is stimulating with the surrounding creatives and nature being so close to isolate.

TOP RECOMMENDATIONS FOR VISITORS AND LOCALS
My friend, Kelly Wearstler, has a great hotel—The Proper Hotel (Santa Monica and Downtown). Each is uniquely designed with great textures and colors. We’ve also collaborated on an oak smoked dark sea salt chocolate for the hotel. In Malibu my friend Emma Crowther owns The Surfrider Hotel. The rooftop is the best place to see the sunset and they serve my Flamingo Rosé Wine (named Pink Moon).
