John Akomfrah: The Unintended Beauty of Disaster

Open by appointment only through June 5, Lisson Gallery has presented an exhibition of new and recent works by John Akomfrah. Titled “The Unintended Beauty of Disaster,” the show responds to the events of 2020 like the Black Lives Matter protests, following the artist’s reflection on our collective consciousness surrounding topics like ecological disaster, post-colonialism, and the Black British identity. In the show, viewers will find works like Our Skin Is a Monument I, named for Caroline Randall Williams’s essay My Body is a Confederate Monument and the three-screen film Four Nocturns, which is being filmed in the U.K. for the first time.
