The Brant Foundation’s New York City space reopens with an exhibition by Julian Schnabel titled “Self-Portraits of Others.” On view from September 9—December 30, as the title suggests, the show presents a selection of 25 works that study portraiture through art history, where the artist has created his own iterations of preexisting self-portraits by names like Frida Kahlo and Vincent Van Gogh. Made between 2018—2020 by painting over pieces of broken plates that have been adhered to wood, the series offers an overview of the evolution of Schnabel’s practice during the process of creating a film about the life of Van Gogh, At Eternity’s Gate.
