G/ART/EN is presenting the dual exhibition, “DE/CONSTRUCTION,” featuring works by Sarah Loibl and Stan Van Steendam, on view through July 31.
Loibl and Van Steendam see painting as an object that works in different spatial dimensions, and both question its traditional concept. Their approach is antithetical, the contrast of deconstruction (for Loibl) and construction (for Van Steendam). Loibl replaces the canvas with transparent veil-like fabrics and physically deconstructs the painting into multiple layers. Van Steendam constructs massive monochrome works that the artist calls “painting” rather than “sculptures,” questioning the definitions of these traditional categories.
