Leah Gordon: Kanaval

In a survey that chronicles 20 years of the legendary Carnival in Jacmel, Haiti, the photographer, filmmaker, curator, collector, and writer Leah Gordon presents “Kanaval” at MOCA North Miami. Curated by MOCA curator Adeze Wilford, the show reveals a collection of poetic and haunting black-and-white photographs documented with a mechanical medium-format camera and a new film that features oral histories from the heads of troupes who design the costumes and develop the narratives of Carnival, spotlighting themes of innovation and the self-generated mythology ever-present in Haitian culture.
