Francisca Sosa López: …y nada, agarré mis peroles y me fuí

22 December 2021

Francisca Sosa López’s exhibition “…y nada, agarré mis peroles y me fuí” is open at London’s Pippy Houldsworth Gallery through February 12, 2022. Living and working in London, the Venezuelan-born artist’s practice is informed by her home country and current crises like migration. Sosa López’s vibrant works utilize colors and gestures informed by nature and music to aid her ongoing exploration of ideas of home—seen in works on view like the composition inside of a composition featuring an image of an artwork hanging on a brick wall, framed in a large rectangle of black.

“My practice is based on the complicated relationship I have with my country. Reflecting on issues concerning Venezuela, particularly the migration crisis, I produce work based on my personal feelings, reactions, disappointments and affections to my country,” said the artist. “From a conceptual lifelong project of drawing one bag per Venezuelan migrant (6 million migrants to date) to a mixture of abstract and figurative paintings, I explore how the idea of a country travels with its people and the various ways it may be portrayed. “
