September 8, 2020 - September 26, 2020
Night Gallery presents “BIG MOOD,” an exhibition of new paintings by Andrea Marie Breiling. The artist’s practice is animated by a spirit of reverent defiance, engaging the history of abstract painting while she resists a singular mode of inquiry. This new body of work invites the viewer to dispel with convention and experience each piece on its own wholehearted terms.
The works in the exhibition subvert the conventions of painting. In some places the canvas is dyed instead of primed, creating vivid foundations for dizzyingly saturated compositions. By combining a myriad substrates, Breiling allows violent chemical reactions to appear on her paintings. She approaches each painting with a unique set of solutions, showing a masterful understanding of color and a spirit of discovery.
Gabriela Ruiz’s “Futurition” takes viewers inside the mind of the artist through a series of sculptural paintings, video works, and soundscapes.
OCHI’s exhibition of Brian Wills debuts 12 new wall-hanging works that have been placed strategically throughout the gallery.
Raqib Shaw’s “Tales from an Urban Garden” comprises a series of works inspired by memories of his mother’s garden.

Phyllida Barlow’s “glimpse” features new large-scale works responding to Hauser & Wirth’s home in the historic Globe Mills complex.

“Big Heartedness, Be My Neighbor” spans the practice of the artist Pipilotti Rist from the 1980s to the present day.
