February 11, 2023 - August 5, 2023
The California African American Museum (CAAM) presents the first U.S. exhibition of British artist Helen Cammock on February 15 at Art + Practice in Los Angeles. “Helen Cammock: I Will Keep My Soul” is a multifaceted display of poetry, performance, film, books, and archival documents inspired by the artist’s experience in New Orleans during her residency with the Rivers Institute for Contemporary Art & Thought and the Amistad Research Center. Cammock brings to life conversations, interactions, and experiences with the city’s rich community and history. The visionary echoes voices of artists and activists from the past and present while creating her own story by way of ceramics, poetry, and her newfound playing of the trumpet. Throughout the exhibition, Cammock tells the story of artist Elizabeth Catlett and her battle for creative authority of her 1976 commission of the Louis Armstrong sculpture in New Orleans’ Armstrong Park.
