On view at David Kordansky Gallery is “The Japan Drawings,’’ an exhibition bringing together four groups of works by Mary Weatherford. The works on view are shellac ink drawings on Gampi Torinko, that the artist produced during a 2019 residency at Troedsson Villa in Nikko, Japan.This series of new drawings echoes with the unique environment of Troedsson Villa, where ancient and modern architecture exist within a forest landscape, resulting in different compositional approaches, color palettes and textures. As her paintings, Weatherford’s drawings are informed by her experimentation with different abstract materials and respond to a particular place, time, moment and idea.
